About

Our Mission: pianoSonoma is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to providing a unique forum for emerging Artists in Residence to interact with serious adult musicians through concerts, chamber music rehearsals, classes and community engagements. By helping to educate festival participants in the arts of musicianship and performance, Artists in Residence develop leadership and communication skills, while gaining valuable teaching experience. Through this intersection of musicians and their collaborations in community concerts, we also create new audience awareness and appreciation of classical music.

pianoSonoma is a music festival that brings together Artists in Residence (current conservatory music majors or recent graduates) and adult musicians to collaborate and perform in private and public concerts and community workshops in Sonoma and Napa Counties, CA. This intersection of Artists in Residence and our adult participants creates a rich and vibrant experience for everyone.

We keep our program uniquely small in order to create the most supportive and collegial atmosphere possible. Each week-long session offers private lessons taught by faculty, guided rehearsals, daily masterclasses and public performances.

What Our Participants Are Saying:

Last week, I attended the pianoSonoma Music Festival in Northern California, and I have to say – what an amazing program! I have never met a more supportive, helpful, and astonishingly talented group of instructors. After a week of lessons, concerts, master classes, and wine tasting(!), every participant grew by leaps and bounds. But the most amazing aspect of this festival was the atmosphere. There was never a sense of competition or superiority; instead, there was only camaraderie and support. I would highly recommend this program to adult pianists of any level – you’ll come out with invaluable knowledge and a brand new group of friends.–Heather Moore

I will never forget the interaction that I had with all of [the Artists in Residence] over the week. I so appreciated that they were so personable and generous with their support and encouragement toward all of us. I feel it was the most profound week of musical growth that I have had in my musical career and I thank all of you for that. –Wendi Kirby-Alexander

After skimming along on the surface of piano music for years, pianoSonoma gave me the time, the inspired and inspiring instruction, to plunge into the depths of a single Bach Prelude.  What a delight!  And the setting, and the wine made the experience transfiguring.  –Doug Ingram

The BEST thing that I ever did for myself!  Thanks to everyone involved!  —Susan Bishop

I was amazed by how much I was able to grow musically in only one week. The time spent practicing, performing, studying theory and receiving perfomance coaching is intense, but enormously gratifying – especially when you endure it with a group of people who is so dedicated to the craft. My experience at pianoSonoma re-ignited my commitment to piano study. — Chaim Zeitz

I’ve participated in many ‘music camps’ over the years and pianoSonoma was one of the more memorable owing to the smaller size, venue, camaraderie and great musicianship. I’d recommend pianoSonoma without hesitation. — Ed Papier

EPIC is the only word for my pianoSonoma experience! My interest was primarily playing chamber music with professionals. I learnt so much from the accomplished young pros and from Jessica and Michael in lessons and performance classes – all of which enabled my playing to reach a new level. The days were packed with playing and learning and the evenings full of concerts, wine and delicious artisanal food. Bravo! –Annette McEvoy

My wife and chamber music partner, Barbara (flute), and I (piano) are already selecting trios and quartets for next year’s pianoSonoma! After our week this summer we realize that no other music workshop – and we’ve been to many – ever gave us such focused, professional-level attention to enhancing our interpretive and ensemble skills. And then, add in the fine lodging, practice/performing venues and opportunities for exploring beautiful countryside and dining spots! We look forward to being repeaters for years to come! –Paul (and Barbara) Krieger

The experience at pianoSonoma surpassed my expectations. The pianos and facilities were superb, the interaction with fellow-students delightful, the relaxed atmosphere enjoyable. Above all, the generous time with instructors and resident musicians was surpassingly valuable. I enthusiastically look forward to returning next summer. –John Gidwitz

I came back recharged and energized in my playing and the recipient of much wisdom from Jess and Mike. — Gloria Milner
