Artists in Residence

Saturday, July 16-Saturday, July 30, 2022

Our Artist in Residence program is a rigorous program open to the most gifted and accomplished musical leaders of tomorrow. It is Peter for pianoSonomafully-funded, covering all travel and housing expenses, and offers a stipend. Our two-week program gives current conservatory students and recent graduates an opportunity to play a leadership role among our adult participants of many backgrounds. Artists in Residence will lead and coach these musicians in guided rehearsals, performance classes, and community concerts.

Artists in Residence will also have many opportunities to perform in a variety of musical settings. They will collaborate with each other and pianoSonoma faculty members in gala concerts at vineyards and other high-profile venues, as well as perform in community education concerts. At all of these performances, Artists in Residence will engage concert-goers through speaking and direct interaction, as we look to further our mission of expanding audience awareness of classical music.

 What our Artists are saying:

“Thank you for a magical two weeks in Sonoma making music and new friends (and introducing me to the art of wine-making)!  This was by far the most special festival I’ve been to and every aspect was so finely put together.  I really appreciated how everyone at the festival came with a purpose and dedication.  It really revitalizes everything for me at a perfect time when I’m about to start my MM, so thank you for bringing me onboard and giving me this opportunity to learn so much in a short time.

The mix between teaching, coaching chamber music, playing with the participants, and performing with the Artists in Residence was perfect in my opinion and I loved the structure and intimacy it allowed.  I see what you mean by ‘one big family.’ I would love to be a part of this again in the future.”–Angie Zhang, pianist

pianoSonoma represents ideal music making in the 21st century. It is a forum for intense, analytical musical thought, held together by the sheer love of music and piano playing. The setting is picturesque, the organization flawless, and the concert venues divine. Never before have I had the pleasure of working with a group of musicians so rooted in the beauties of making music. Jessica and Michael are two of the most knowledgeable musicians I know, and there are no better teachers for these enthused pianists. Not only did the pianists grow to new heights during my time in Sonoma, but I as well grew as a teacher and collaborator. I was reminded why I decided to become a musician through the participants’ joy and humility. I will never forget this wonderful week, and all those who shared it with me. I have no doubt that great music has helped establish life-long friendships. I recommend pianoSonoma highly to any curious pianist, or any musician at all.” –Julian Schwarz, cellist

“I loved being part of pianoSonoma as a Young Artist! I was very impressed by the marvelous artistic atmosphere and how each participant showed such a great commitment to music-making. pianoSonoma helped me develop my teaching skills and offered a great number of opportunities to perform in beautiful spaces and wineries. Thanks to Michael and Jessica as well as all the wonderful participants, pianoSonoma was an incredibly enriching experience.” –Kim Mai Nguyen, violist

“I had a wonderful experience as a Young Artist at pianoSonoma. The festival provides a warmly supportive community that encourages musical growth. The participants’ enthusiasm was palpable and contagious, and I enjoyed working with them one-on-one in our guided rehearsals. I grew considerably in my ability to coach pianists, and it was a joy to witness the progress made by all. I also had great fun performing for such a receptive audience. I left pianoSonoma with new skills, renewed enthusiasm, and great memories.” –Mary Edge, violinist
