Meet our 2015 Young Composer Winner, Calvin Hitchcock!

The 2015 Young Composer Program is open to any person residing in the United States or Canada age 24 or under as of July 1st, 2015. Composers will submit works no longer than 10 minutes that fit within the subset of instruments played by our Artists in Residence (mezzo-soprano, flute, violin, cello, two pianos). The selected composer will receive one private lesson with Composer in Residence Paul Frucht, a rehearsal with our Artists in Residence, a performance of the work on August 4th in Schroeder Hall at The Green Music Center of Sonoma State University, and an archival recording. The selected composer will arrive on Monday, August 3rdand should plan to leave in the evening on August 4th after the concert or on August 5th. pianoSonoma cannot provide compensation for travel to and from the festival but will provide housing and meals for the duration of the composer’s stay at the festival.

Guidelines for Submission

  • Composers must be 24 years of age or younger as of July 1, 2015.
  • Composers must be residents of the United States or Canada.
  • Works must be limited to the following instruments, in any combination preferred: 1 mezzo-soprano voice, 1 flute (no alto flute), 1 violin, 1 cello, 2 pianos.
  • Works must not total more than 10 minutes in length.
  • Entrants may submit multiple works.
  • Works must be original to the entrant, and by applying for the 2015 Young Composer Program, the entrant maintains that he or she created the work and has full rights to its performance.
  • If selected as pianoSonoma’s 2015 Young Composer, composer will receive one private lesson with Composer in Residence Paul Frucht, a rehearsal with our Artists in Residence, a performance of the work on August 4th in Schroeder Hall at The Green Music Center of Sonoma State University, and an archival recording. All meals and housing will be provided for the duration of the composer’s stay at the festival. All other transportation costs will be the responsibility of the composer.

Application Procedure

1. To apply, e-mail the following materials to info@pianosonoma.org:

  • PDF(s) of the score(s)
  • Composer Resume detailing prior musical study
  • Audio of the submission (mp3 recordings are encouraged, but MIDI realizations are acceptable). Please provide a link to the recording online or use a file-sharing service such as Dropbox or WeTransfer. Please do not send audio files as attachments.
  • In the body of the e-mail include: Name, E-mail Address, Phone Number, and Performance history of the work(s) submitted

2.  Pay the non-refundable Application Fee(s).

  • $10 for each piece submitted (i.e. two pieces submitted =$20 fee)
